CHAPTER NINE
Olivia was eager to get back to the station. Kimmyâs information had been exactly what she had been hoping to hear. It confirmed all her hunches about the man that had taken Kimmy and the other girls. Now that she had nailed the profile, it should help them focus their search.
âVince already ran the search for a little girlâs body within the city limits and didnât find anything in that time frame. I had him expand the search to the surrounding area. I donât think Joe would leave a body anywhere that it might be tied back to him.â Olivia fell back on old habits and took Nateâs arm as they walked to the car.
âYou sound like a cop,â Nate said with a laugh. âI may have taught you too well.â
âPlease. Donât try to take credit for my genius.â Olivia felt a tingling on the back of her neck and she glanced over her shoulder. âYour girlfriend is having a hard time saying goodbye.â
Nate groaned. âIs she really watching us leave?â
âI probably shouldnât be holding your arm. I can hear her heart breaking.â Olivia was still feeling a little jealous over how Shay had been interacting with Nate.
âStop it, Liv. Donât be that woman.â Nate gave her a cautioning look.
Nate never hesitated to call Olivia out when she was being ridiculous. âI canât help it,â she said. âI donât want to be the jealous wife, Nater. But youâre just so damn sexy.â
Adorably, Nate blushed. âGet in the damn car, Thompson.â He held the door open for her and she leaned in to kiss his cheek.
âSo. Damn. Sexy,â she repeated with her lips pressed to his ear. All pretenses of professionalism had long been abandoned.
Nate slowly shook his head. âRemind me what I ever did to convince you to marry me?â
âYou asked,â Olivia said simply.
By the time they made it to the station, Olivia had managed to get her hormones back in check. It didnât hurt that the station was the least sexy place she could imagine. It always smelled like stale coffee and bad cologne. Middle-aged, overweight men stared unabashedly at her as she followed Nate through the maze of desks. Nate nodded to a few of them and glared at others. Olivia tried to ignore all of them.
âVince said heâd meet us here, right?â Nate asked when they reached his desk. Vinceâs chair was empty.
âHe said he needed to swing by Evidence first, but yeah heâs supposed to be here.â Olivia looked around the room just in case Vince had wandered off to chat with a colleague. âDo you think they will ever stop staring at me?â
âProbably not,â Nate said with a resigned sigh as he flipped through the mail that had been left on his desk. âWe donât get a lot of women in here, except for the handful on the squad. And none of them look as good in their work clothes as you do.â
âBut they see women out in the world? Possibly have wives? Daughters?â
